Public Transportation
About
Lockport was built as a transportation hub because of its power location along the Des Plaines River. Today, an interstate highway, 2 state roads, 2 railroads, a nearby airport, and the canal round out the current modes of transportation accessible from downtown.
Airport
Just 3 miles from Downtown Lockport is Lewis University. Lewis has an airport capable of landing small commuter jets. The airport is owned by the Joliet Regional Port District, and since 1989 has invested over $30 million dollars in the facility to meet the needs of corporate aircraft.
Highway Interchanges
In November of 2008, the City of Lockport gained access to I-355 when the Veterans Parkway extension connected I-55 with I-80. Lockport has 2 new interchanges at 159th Street (also known as Route 7) and Archer Avenue (also known as Route 171).
Metra
Lockport's commuter Metra train is the Heritage Corridor. The station is located at the corner of 13th Street and State Street. Currently, 6 commuter trains go to and from Chicago on weekdays.
Parking
The Metra lot has daily parking for $1 per day, where you pay using the automated pay boxes. There are also 53 permit parking spaces. Permits are sold quarterly at $60 per quarter for January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December. If you would like a permit, please mail your check for $60 to:
City of Lockport - Metra Permit Parking
222 E 9th Street
Lockport, IL 60441
Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope so we can mail you the permit, or so we can mail your check back if we sell out of permits. Please write "Metra Permit Parking" on the check as well. If we have more requests for permits than permits available, we hold a "lottery" to assign the permits.
Also, please keep in mind that if you are leaving your car parked in the lot overnight, please contact the Police Department non-emergency at 815-838-2131.
Additional Information
If you have any questions, you can contact Jennifer Fornaris in the Water Department at 815-838-0549, ext. 2103.
